A National Mountain Centre Proposed for the Canadian Rockies
An exciting new proposal is presently being considered for the construction of a National Mountain Centre at the gateway to the Banff National Park on the Trans-Canada highway at Canmore, Alberta. What is unique about this centre is that it will provide visitors with an opportunity to learn about nature, history, culture, science and sport in any mountain region they would like to visit in the Canadian West and then connect them to the widest range of high quality educational, recreational and visitor services available in any of the places they choose to go.
It is the goal of this new centre to foster understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of Canada’s mountains by providing learning opportunities and experiences that will be fun, entertaining, knowledge-based and accessible to all. The National Mountain Centre will also be a vehicle for the promotion of safe and informed travel in the mountains. The Centre will be highly committed to the preservation of the ecological integrity of Canada’s mountain places.
It will provide traditional, local and the latest scientific knowledge relating to mountain National and Provincial Parks in Canada. By upgrading common knowledge, raising public awareness of mountain issues and guidelines for safe and sustainable mountain practices, the National Mountain Centre will foster understanding of the importance of mountain landscapes to our identity as Canadians.
