2015 Tour of Alberta
The annual Tour of Alberta bicycle race will take place from September 2 -7, 2015, featuring stops in seven different host communities. The host communities are already hard at work helping to plan the route and putting together festivals. They’re also receiving support from the Municipal District of Greenview and Parks Canada.
We’re excited to see some new communities – Grande Cache, Jasper, Edson, and Spruce Grove – hosting the Tour, presented by ATB Financial. This annual bike race offers a new route each year, and it’s supported province-wide. For the first time ever, the race features a mountain stage – and it’s in the stunning scenery of the Jasper Mountains.
Here’s a summary of the stages of this year’s race:
Stage 1: In addition to the new mountain stage, this year’s race also includes another new component – a Team Time Trail (TTT) in the City of Grande Prairie. It will replace the Individual Time Trials of 2013 and 2014. Each team includes eight cyclists who will all try to have the fastest collective time. The start of the race is sure to be an exciting sight for spectators as teams leave the start line at regular intervals.
Stage 2: The next stage of the race takes cyclists through the scenic boreal forests of the County of Grande Prairie on Thursday, September 3.
Stage 3: On September 4, the racers will travel west from Grand Cache to towards the Canadian Rocky Mountains, finishing in Jasper National Park.
Stage 4: Cyclists will begin Stage 4 race on Saturday, September 5, in the town of Jasper. This stage will finish at the top of Marmot Basin ski resort.
Stage 5: On Sunday, September 6, the racers will start in Edson and travel east to Spruce Grove.
Stage 6: The final stage is a circuit race in Edmonton.
