Fort Steele Heritage Town

Fort Steele Heritage Town is a restored 1890's pioneer boomtown, with over 60 heritage shops and display buildings. Operated by The Friends of Fort Steele Society, popular summertime features include the Wild Horse Theatre and living history street dramas, a steam railway, horse-drawn wagon rides, blacksmith, harness maker, and domestic interpretation.

Nestled between the majestic Rocky and Purcell Mountain Ranges in the southeast corner of British Columbia, Fort Steele is open year round, with programming in effect and food service available from early May through Canadian Thanksgiving (October). A variety of special events occur year round. In 2006 they feature:

June 10: Rockin' in the Rockies Show & Shine.

Classic & Vintage cars of days gone by, plus hotrods & customized vehicles...all on display in the picture perfect old-time setting of Fort Steele Heritage Town. Gates open 9:30-5, car show runs 10-3.

June 18 3rd Annual Father's Day at the Fort Steele Railway.

Dads ride free on the train's first trips of the year! A variety of steam-powered equipment on display. Admission not required, but if you choose to go into the town site, Dads are free there too! This is the first day of the Fort Steele Sunday Market. Every Sunday from 11-4 until

August 27. July 1 Summer season begins.

Wagon Rides, Wild Horse Theatre, Living History Street Theatre, Summer Silent Film Series (evenings) and Fort Steele Steam Railway open for the summer. And the same day...

July 1 Dominion Day Celebration

Happy Birthday Canada! Bring the family for a slice of birthday cake, musical entertainment, living history street dramas, and heritage games. This event is just plain, good old-fashioned fun. A great way to spend the day!

Sept. 3 Final day of summer season

Gossip Tours run twice daily this season. Heritage Trades, domestic interpretation and food service remain open through Canadian Thanksgiving.

Sept. 10 Kootenay Country Fair

It's a good old-fashioned country fair! You'll find entries including baked goods, produce & cut flowers, preserves, needlework, best scarecrow & decorated bike! Livestock entries include rabbits and poultry. Over $750 in prize money and ribbons up to 3rd place in each class. Special exhibits, live entertainment, games, wagon rides and a fun auction at the end of the day to kick-start funding for next year! Last day of the Fort Steele Sunday Market.

October 8 25th Annual Thanksgiving Celebration.

Bring your friends and family to enjoy one of Fort Steele's favourite events. Harvest potatoes for the local food bank, and enjoy a Thanksgiving offering at the Lambi House afterwards. Activities from noon to 4 pm, include the popular Pie Auction (contribute to the Friends of Fort Steele Society, and take home a delicious home-baked pie!). Dress warmly for a crisp autumn afternoon in the great outdoors. Bountiful Thanksgiving Dinner in the International Hotel. Call Shauna at 250.420.7158 (admission free for those with reservations).

October 9 Final day of fall season.

We're still open for self-guided walking tours and pre-booked activities. Groups call ahead for options.
