Vic Panei’s January 2014 Photography Exhibition and Open House

Posted on: December 28th, 2013

Vic Panei’s landscape photos will be on display and for sale at the Central Blends Cafe in Calgary throughout the month of January 2014. His photos feature landscapes from the Rocky & Purcell Mountains, Columbia Valley, Europe, and South America. Vic’s photography has been both viewed and commended by some of our readers. Vic won a reader’s choice award for one of our annual photo contests in the past. Because Vic’s photo exhibit at Central Blends is an annual tradition, his work is also familiar to some Calgary residents.

Friesen’s Printing Revived Joyce Pallister-Bronsch’s Business

Posted on: December 19th, 2013

The floods in Alberta last spring caused tremendous loss, but the story of Joyce Pallister-Bronsch  is an example of the deep generosity shown in the aftermath of the storm. Joyce’s first husband Hank was extremely well known and loved in western Canada. In addition to writing for World of Beef magazine and Alberta Beef Magazine, he also started to write 3 books recounting the history of the west. After he passed away, Joyce finished writing his books and has sold them through various outlets in Alberta. Tragically, she lost every single one of Hank’s book’s in the flood.

Lingo and Lines

The editor of Alberta Beef Magazine, Garth McClintock, shared that Joyce poignantly wrote “I am out of business” in an email she sent to him. However, her printing company’s representative, Dana Fasco, talked with her boss about helping Joyce. Friesen then offered to reprint all three book titles–a total of over 1,000 books–at no charge! Thanks to the generosity of Friesen, Joyce is no longer out of business, and readers can continue to enjoy stories of western Canada’s history.

The Swatch Freewide Tour Stop at Revelstoke Rescheduled to March 2014

Posted on: December 16th, 2013

The Swatch Freewide Tour stop at Revelstoke has been rescheduled to March 2014. The tour was originally scheduled to open at the Revelstoke Mountain Resort this week. However, the resort’s website reports that “Although Revelstoke Mountain Resort (RMR) has recently opened for the season with great early season conditions, the competition venue known as ‘Mac Daddy’ face is in the backcountry outside of the resort, and is not yet suitable for the event.” The avalanche rating at the beginning of December was “considerable.” Before the competition takes place, the snow will need to settle and mature on the north-facing slope which is outside the resort boundary in backcountry terrain.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort opening day – November 30, 2013

The 2014 Freeride World Tour season will now open in on January 18 at Courmayeur Mont Blanc, ITA, with men’s ski and snowboard competition.

While fans are waiting for the competition, they can stay busy skiing themselves at the Revelstoke Mountain Resort. The slopes at the resort have ideal early season conditions. In fact, the early season conditions are the best they’ve been since the resort opened in 2007. Even with the delay of the Swatch Freeride World Tour event, the resort is still abuzz with plenty of outdoor activity.

High in the Rockies: Easy Summits For all Ages

Posted on: November 21st, 2013

You can’t drive through the mountain parks without looking at majestic peaks surrounding you on all sides and wondering what it would feel like to stand on one of them. Fortunately for those not equipped with a background in rock climbing or mountaineering, there are many easy summits to tackle. A couple of them even offer gondola or tramway support to reach all but the last 100-200 metres of the mountain top.

Sulphur Mountain, Banff National Park

With the price of a gondola ticket, you can reach within 30 metres of the summit of Sulphur Mountain and introduce even your youngest child to climbing mountains. From the upper gondola terminal the Sulphur Mountain Vista Trail leads to the summit via a 2km return hike on a very good boardwalk with stairs. Hikers who are up for more of a challenge can also ascend the Sulphur Mt. Trail to the summit in 700 metres spread out over 6km. Paying for a one-way gondola ticket on the way down is a nice reward at the end that may even entice children to climb to the summit.

Tunnel Mountain, Banff National Park

This is a classic summit in Banff that is located right within the town site off Tunnel Mountain Drive.  With 4.6km return and 275 metres of height gain, it is an enjoyable half-day hike that begs to be done at least once while touring through the Rockies. From the top you will be able to sit on big flat rock slabs to have lunch while you look down on the entire town of Banff and Vermillion Lakes.

Whistler’s Summit, Jasper National Park

This hike offers one of the easiest ways to access the alpine in a national park, thanks to the Jasper Tramway which carries you up almost 1000 metres with no effort on your part. A few minutes after entering the tram, you will be looking down on all of Jasper far beneath you. From the tramway upper terminal, it is just a short 3km return hike to the summit of Whistler’s Mountain. The elevation gain is less than 200 metres, making this a great first summit for families and young children.

The Bear’s Hump, Waterton National Park

While not an official mountain, this small hump on the lower slopes of Mt. Crandell offers an amazing view of the Waterton Lakes. Every summer, visitors to the park depart from the Waterton Visitor Centre to tackle this small summit. The short 200 metre climb may leave you out of breath in spots, but it ends with the best view 2.8 km (return) can provide.
